GPS radio occultation with CHAMP and GRACE: A first look at a new and promising satellite configuration for global atmospheric sounding
نویسنده
چکیده
CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) formed a satellite configuration for precise atmospheric sounding during the first activation of the GPS (Global Positioning System) radio occultation experiment aboard GRACE on 28 and 29 July 2004. 338 occultations were recorded aboard both satellites, providing globally distributed vertical profiles of refractivity, temperature and specific humidity. The combined set of CHAMP and GRACE profiles shows excellent agreement with meteorological analysis. Almost no refractivity bias is observed between 5 and 30 km, the standard deviation is between 1 and 2% within this altitude interval. The GRACE satellite clock stability is significantly improved in comparison with CHAMP. This allows for the application of a zero difference technique for precise analysis of the GRACE occultation data.

The German geoscience satellite CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload, launched on July 15, 2000, Reigber et al., 2002) is in orbit now for more than 2 years. CHAMP's measurements are used to determine Earth's gravity and magnetic field and to derive precise information about vertical temperature, humidity and electron density distribution on a global scale using the innovative GPS radio occ...

The atmosphere sounding experiment of the German CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite mission was activated on February 11, 2001. Since then more than 110,000 occultations were recorded as of mid-December 2002. The results of nearly two years CHAMP GPS (Global Positioning System) occultation measurements and data analysis have shown, that significant improvements of the GPS radio...
متن کاملGlobal monitoring of tropospheric water vapor with GPS radio occultation aboard CHAMP
The paper deals with application of GPS radio occultation (RO) measurements aboard CHAMP for the retrieval of tropospheric water vapor profiles. The GPS RO technique provides a powerful tool for atmospheric sounding which requires no calibration, is not affected by clouds, aerosols or precipitation, and provides an almost uniform global coverage. We briefly overview data processing and retrieva...

Given that agricultural cycles, human well-being, economic growth and many societal activities are affected by climate variability, a greater understanding of critical atmospheric parameters (such as refractivity, pressure, temperature and humidity) is of paramount importance. Recently many countries have investigated the feasibility of using the space-based radio navigation satellites of the G...
